NDM Story #2 - What does a feminist internet look like?

What does a feminist internet look like?

Summary: This news story is one that occurred as a result of the sexualisation of a Brazilian 12 year old girl who was on junior MasterChef. This post could be seen as the aftermath of the incident and it highlights what the internet would be like if it were (and this is an intention) run by feminists. The article discusses issues ranging from online harassment to speaking up on how women would like to be treated. It also demonstrates the impact that a feminist internet could have on the wider population, as the movement grows.

•Capitalism is being challenged
Feminist views can be shared
•Awareness of harassment has already been made using hashtags on the social media platform Twitter.
•Men made up 68% of all of Facebook's employees:
*77% in senior leadership
*85% of those working in technology

My personal view is that although I'm not a huge advocate for feminism (as I feel it can be too extreme at times), the idea of women being able to broadcast their views and experiences for the wider population to acknowledge and be aware of, is an important thing that should happen. I think that free speech is vital and given how corrupt modern politics can be, it may be worthwhile that people outside of this government setting could contribute to a more realistic depiction of what goes on in the world. I think that the current most popular Media outlets are influenced heavily by the male population and that female counterparts could possibly be silenced in this environment. Whereas, in the case of a feminist internet, I feel that audiences could gain a less hidden and more open insight into the true current affairs which occur, not just in the UK but also worldwide.
