NDM Story #3 - Mobile giant Three to block online advertising

Mobile giant Three to block online advertising

Summary

The mobile network Three has the intention of being the first main European mobile network to prevent online adverts from being viewed by its users. This decision will have a major impact on digital corporations who rely on mobile advertising to contribute to their regular revenue. This alteration will prove to be damaging to these firms' success, as a result. It will also have an impact on companies who actually create the online advertisement for their brand (eg Missguided for clothing or eBay for general promotion of their service).

  • Three has a user population of 9 million within the UK
  • It has been compared to a "watershed" in the mobile network industry

My opinion:

I think that personally, for consumers and users of Three's mobile network, this will be extremely beneficial as it means that they wouldn't have to use an additional "ad blocker" service while they are browsing the internet on their mobile devices. Therefore, I feel that this is a Unique Selling Point for the company's service which may attract other potential customers which may currently be using another mobile network service, to the Three brand which would contribute to Three's success. However, for the companies who will make a loss from ad revenue, this of course may be detrimental to their success and may trigger a reaction from these companies which could alter the online system of advertisements even moreso.
