Publishers call on government to help over Google and Facebook
Summary
The News Media Association (NMA) is the trade body for newspaper publishers who are aiming to diminish or lessen the amount of revenue that corporations such as Google and Facebook earn, in order for them to pocket this money themselves.
These publishers believe that it is unfair how much work goes into their research and production of news in comparison to those using Facebook and Google, and how little reception and revenue they are getting for their work.
Their suggestion for a solution to this issue is that the government keep an eye on them (government watchdogs) and attempt to regulate the content published on the search engine and social media outlet in order to make the publishers' work more appealing towards the public.

- Decrease the "substantial costs" that the members of the NMA face
- Increase revenue for these publishers
- Work with Google and Facebook in order to reach a wider audience
My personal opinion:
From this post, I think it is evident that news publishers feel very threatened and are at a loss monetarily and regarding their market power, or lack thereof.
This definitely proves that the surge in new and digital media corporations has caused negative impacts for institutions and particularly those that already existed in the news industry.
It is clear that these publishing companies feel undervalued and are not being recognised for the efforts that they put in to find and produce authentic news stories. When compared to the misleading information that can be processed by third parties on social media platforms such as Facebook, it can be seen that the publication corporations' dedication to authenticating stories seems to have gone unnoticed and neglected.
I can understand why these corporations have sought the government's help as they feel that there is injustice in this system and that companies such as Facebook and Google own too much market power. However, I feel that it would be difficult to try to control such large companies in this way.
The fact that they've attempted to appear as though they'd be happy to join forces with Google and Facebook exploits their selfish desire to also gain a share of the revenue generated from these sites. These corporations claim that this would be great for newer audiences but I personally believe that they only really care about themselves and how much money they personally make. I think that this is just a compromise that they want to make in order to try to increase and maximise their own revenue and not completely lose it to Facebook and Google.
